Staff Weekly Updates

Here is what students have been doing in their classrooms

Mrs. Cline - Art

Art students were challenged this week with our House of Cards activity. This activity focuses on small group collaboration. Day 1 was forming their small groups and creating the story for their group's "dream house". Day 2 was taking the details from their story and building their house using ONLY note cards. No scissors, glue, or tape is allowed in the construction of their dream house. After assembling their houses, we went around the room giving each group time to tell their story and talk about the challenges of this activity and how their group worked together to overcome the challenges.

Mrs. Wightman's 6th Grade Life Science

We are finishing the year with our final lesson on "Changes in Ecosystems".  In this lesson we learned how organisms are affected by disturbances such as wildfires, seasons, floods, drought, and humans.  Students were surprised to learn that some forests, like the Sequoia forest, depend on wildfires to clear out dead material as well as thin out the forest canopy to allow sunlight through which allows growth of new saplings.

Mrs. Wightman's 6th Grade STEM

We have been working on our Jet Toys for the past few weeks and have completed all of the testing and data collection on our Prototype cars.  Students are now using this data to design their own car and deciding if they want their car to go fast, go a long distance, do wheelies, spins, or just travel slowly in a straight line.  Students will be doing their final presentations to explain any difficulties they faced in their design as well as how they tackled these issues to have their car meet their specifications.  The final task is to have races to see whose car goes the fastest, does the most unique tricks, or travels in a straight line.
