Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve

Welcome Mrs. Katrina Keenan

Chieftain Families,

I am pleased to share that we have secured a former DUHS math teacher, Katrina Keenan, to serve as our long-term substitute for 7th grade math for the remainder of the school year. Ms. Keenan brings valuable experience and familiarity with our district, and we are excited to welcome her back.

Her first day with students will be Wednesday, March 4th.

Thank you,

Mr. Guernsey, Principal

DMS students Owen Killarney, Stella Leighton, and Jackson Rohdy participated in the Scripps Cloverleaf Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 24, held at the Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College. A total of 51 students from schools across the region competed in the event.

All three students did a phenomenal job, and we are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.

Stella came in 29th place

Jackson came in 18th place

Owen advanced to the top 10, finishing 7th overall

What an outstanding accomplishment for all of these students!

Message from the Nurse

We have had many students that are out of school for various illnesses and I wanted to remind parents about our illness policy which states that children should stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of any fever reducing medication such as Tylenol or Motrin.  I also want to remind parents that it is important for you to contact the school to notify us that your child is ill.  The school is required by the public health law to report illness numbers to the local health department each week and the information we report is gathered from what parents report to the school.  It is very helpful for our report if you can provide us with a basic idea of what type of illness your child is experiencing.  Also if your child is seen at a physician office please bring in a written excuse from their office to document their illness.

Just a reminder, any medication that must be administered at school must have a completed medication authorization form completed by a physician.  Medication must be brought to school by a parent/guardian with the authorization form completed. This form can be obtained in the office along with the Dowagiac Union School Medication Policy.

Also reminding you as we are still in the cold months,  your children will be wearing coats and hats so with those we find the number of students with head lice to be increasing.  Please remember to check your child’s hair frequently during these times.  If you notice any signs of head lice please begin the treatment process immediately.  This process is very time consuming, but in order to keep the head lice from returning the entire process must be completed.  If you would like information about the treatment of head lice please feel free to contact me at 269-782-4420 ext. 1218 or sdorman@dowagiacschools.org with any questions or concerns.

6th Grade Social Studies - Mrs. Stanford

This week in class we have been finishing up our reading, vocabulary, and review questions on contemporary life in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Students were able to learn about cultural aspects such as languages, religions, foods, sports, and more through these regions. We also examined the political challenges that have happened in the past 30 years, natural disasters that have impacted these areas, and difficulties that local communities face. To finalize the chapter students are working in small groups and are researching modern cultural aspects and challenges in one of three regions from this chapter. Lastly, students were able to show off their skills by completing their North American Countries Map Quiz - be sure to check PowerSchool for an updated grade!

Mrs. Cline

Digital Design students recently learned how to mat and frame their own projects. They did well for their first time doing this! These students also were in charge of setting up the display case for their work. I'm excited and proud of how well the students completed this project from start to finish!

Art 1 students are finishing their 2-point perspective cityscape drawings this week.

Art 2 students just started their Surrealism Grid drawings. This week they learned how to create a grid on their chosen image and then upscale and draw the grid on their paper. Once the outlines of the image are lightly sketched in place, they will learn multiple shading techniques for using pen.

More students have had a chance at throwing on the pottery wheel! These students never cease to amaze me!
