A Message from the Principal

Greetings DMS Families,

We wanted to take this opportunity to update you on a new initiative we are implementing called Student Intervention Turnaround Time (S.I.T.T.).  Although S.I.T.T. may be viewed as a disciplinary measure, at DMS it is a way to intervene with students to help them be successful.

Below is the description of S.I.T.T. from our Student Handbook which can be found on pg. 24.

“S.I.T.T. is a disciplinary measure used to address behavioral issues while allowing students to continue their education without interruption. The goal of S.I.T.T. is to temporarily remove  students from class/es and school activities and place them in a supervised study environment for reflection and continued learning. The administration reserves the right to make the judgment as to whether or not a student is assigned to this program. It is the responsibility of all students assigned to S.I.T.T. to obtain classwork from their teachers in advance. Work sent down to the S.I.T.T. room by teachers is done as a courtesy and does not relieve students of their responsibility to gather their own work. S.I.T.T. can be assigned for a period/s of time in place of being suspended from school. If infractions occur during a S.I.T.T. period/s, additional time may be assigned by the administrator or more progressive discipline measures could result.”

This year S.I.T.T. has been a successful turnaround tool for many of our students in helping them to reflect and shape positive behavior.  To date, approximately 7 out of 10 students who have been assigned S.I.T.T. have not returned to the S.I.T.T. Room or received further consequences.  This information demonstrates this intervention has proven to help our students model the positive behavior we want them to exhibit in our building.

We appreciate your continued support as we work to provide improved services to assist our students in continuing to be successful in our school.

Educationally yours,

Dr. Sean Wightman

Fun Friday

BUSY is an understated word to describe everything that happened last week. Time seemed to "fly by" because of all the things that took place (e.g. Parent Teacher Conferences, Fun Friday, Athletic Games, Spirit Week, Homecoming, etc.). It was memorable to say the least. Below is a brief description of what occurred:

We want to send out a BIG THANK YOU to all of our families who made it out to our Fall Conferences last week. Nearly 50% of our parents met with their child's teachers to discuss their son's or daughter's progress thus far. It was nice to see everyone.

Homecoming Spirit Week was running all week at DMS which ended with a "Fun Friday School Spirit Assembly." Students competed against one another in a number of wacky relays/contests. Teachers also enjoyed watching and assisting students in the planned activities and took part in some of them as well.

Our DMS/ETS Esports Teams won both of their games last week in their quest to win the MSEL Fall Major in Rocket League. They play on Thursday's each week in our DMS/ETS Esports E-Arena which is located in our Media Center classroom. Last year our team finished

Our 8th grade DMS Band students, under the direction of DUS Band Director Mr. VanRoekel, are busy practicing the DUS Fight Song in the hallways during Spirit Week. They will be joining the DUHS Marching Band at the last home football game on Friday, October 25th.

Finally, our 7th and 8th grade Football, Volleyball and Cheer Teams continue their successful seasons having won most of their competitions to date. We are really proud of them!

Great things are always happening at DMS!

Staff Weekly Updates

Here is what students have been doing in their classrooms over the week of 9/30 - 10/4.

Mrs. Wilson

ELA

Over the past two weeks, students in Mrs. Wilson's ELA class have delved into our latest program, Amplify. With a focus on individual moments, the students have been improving their writing skills by incorporating sensory details, vivid verbs, dialogue, and effectively conveying tone and emotion. The emphasis has been on enriching their writing by infusing it with specific and engaging elements, making their narratives come alive with depth and authenticity. Through this program, the students are not only improving their writing techniques but also learning how to craft compelling stories that resonate with readers on a more profound level.

Physical Education

This week we did our unit on diamond sports.  Kickball, wiffle ball, racquet ball and Mat ball.

Mrs. Deering

ELA

Sixth-grade ELA learned how to email a teacher/adult this week. It is important to know how and when to communicate formally.  You don't speak the same way to teachers or other adults as you do to your friends.  We spent time discussing and practicing the difference.

7th grade science

We have completed our lesson on Cell Structures and Functions.  Next week we will be using our microscopes to look at actual samples of plant and animal cells.  Students will get the chance to put their knowledge and skills to the test to see if they can identify some of the organelles they see under the microscope.

6th Grade STEM

We completed our Trapeze project to help us predict the motion of an object.  We were able to look at how the length of the strings and weight affected the motion of the trapeze.  Some students were very surprised that the extra weight added to their trapeze did not affect the motion as much as what they predicted.
