Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve

Dear Chieftain Families,

I am excited to share some important instructional updates that will positively impact your child’s learning experience this year! As part of our ongoing commitment to student success and engagement, we are implementing two key initiatives: Kagan Cooperative Learning Strategies and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) for our educators.

Kagan Structures are research-based instructional strategies that promote active student engagement, teamwork, and accountability. Students learn through structured activities that encourage:

  • Positive peer interaction

  • Equal participation

  • Critical thinking

  • Communication and collaboration skills

These strategies help create a classroom environment where every student is involved, valued, and challenged—supporting both academic achievement and social-emotional growth.

In addition, our teachers are also working in Professional Learning Communities—collaborative teams that meet regularly to:

  • Review student data

  • Share effective teaching practices

  • Set and monitor goals

  • Design lessons to meet the diverse needs of learners

PLCs help ensure teachers work together to support all students and continuously improve instruction. We believe these efforts will enhance not only what students learn, but also how they learn—and prepare them with essential skills for life beyond the classroom.

Thank you for being a valued partner in your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Mr. Guernsey

Join us at the high school on Monday, October 27th, from 5:30 to 7 PM for a spook-tacular Monster Mash. This Halloween activity night is hosted by Chieftain Heart; our Chieftain goal is to spread spirit within our schools and our community. This fang-tastic event is perfect for our little ghouls and goblins in elementary and middle school. Get ready for a night filled with hauntingly good music, thrilling games, and treats galore at various stations. Crafty creatures can create their own treat bags at the craft table, and if the weather is frightfully fine, we’ll play outside! Remember, all young witches and wizards must be accompanied by a parent or an older sibling. Costumes are encouraged, so come dressed to dazzle and delight!

Penny War Follow Up
The Dowagiac Schools' Penny War recently concluded, and we are thrilled to announce that a total of $238.39 was raised for the Sodexo Cancer Walk Team. The spirited competition between Union High School and Dowagiac Middle School resulted in the middle school emerging victorious, raising $182.89 and earning the ultimate bragging rights.
Here are the final standings:

  • 6th grade: $94.16 (highest amount raised)

  • 7th grade: $70.69

  • 8th grade: $18.04

The 6th grade, although initially leading in funds, faced deductions that placed them in the negative with -$3.69. Ultimately, the 7th grade triumphed with a balance of $18.69, making them the winners of the DMS Penny War. The 8th grade came in second with $11.54.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their contributions to this worthy cause. Your generosity and enthusiasm made a meaningful impact in supporting the Sodexo Cancer Walk Team.

Mrs. Wilson - ELA

This week in 8th grade ELA for Mrs. Wilson's class, students have started brainstorming and thinking about their personal heroes. The class will be writing a narrative essay about their hero. To prepare for this assignment, students have read other essays on the topic and have practiced writing various introductions to start their essay. They will continue refining their writing skills next week as they dive deeper into the writing process.
As an exciting opportunity, once the essays are completed, students may choose to enter their work into the America and Me Essay Contest, open to 8th graders across the state of Michigan. The top 10 entries will move forward, with the top three being selected as winners. The first-place winner will then have the chance to compete at the state level, showcasing their writing talents to a wider audience.

7th Grade Life Science:

Our 7th graders have officially kicked off Unit 2, diving into the fascinating world of Classification and Dichotomous Keys, Life Cycles, and Plant Cells. Students are learning how scientists organize living organisms and exploring the unique characteristics that define plant life. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, they’re building a deeper understanding of how living things are grouped and how their life cycles connect within ecosystems.
